My New Cat: Nurture Your Friend

Felines, compared with canines, are highly independent, even fussy creatures. Some call them snobs. Others say they are just not friendly enough. My new cat is like a person: he has character of his own and will not be shaped or trained.

As for attention, that depends on personality. He might like a brush or just a stroke. He may shun your very touch, though jump onto your lap during cold winter nights. Who knows. All long-haired cats need a brush every one or two days, especially when they molt.

Learn about the character of this new pet slowly. If he arrived straight from the mother, a playful kitten side will take over first. Snatches of his mature self will emerge until finally everyone knows if this is a cautious or mischievous animal.

When your new pet is older to start with, perhaps a rescued or inherited animal, the situation is different. He must learn to trust you. His life before might have been very pleasant, or maybe traumatic. Give him time to get to know you and decide for himself if his true personality will shine through. Often potential owners are chosen by the felines themselves. It might be other people who suffer the cold shoulder.

Kittens must stay indoors at first and just play. A bit of wrestling, biting, scratching is all part of developing life skills. He may never need them, but should home be a farm with other cats around, it pays to know how to defend yourself among the others. He will remain inside, however, until he is vaccinated and neutered. He should know home and the hand that feeds him. Keep him at home all the time if lots of predators roam surrounding green space.

When it comes to food and drink, give your pet mainly fresh water to drink and a mixture of dry and wet food. Milk is not very good for cats. As a treat once in a while it is okay for a hardy cat, but no more than that. Wet food helps to provided added moisture and some cats like it best. Dry food acts like a toothbrush, keeping teeth and gums healthy.
