Dogs are much more than just the family pet. Like people, dogs typically become a best friend to talk to, confide in, love, and play with. But dogs, just like humans, can suffer from obesity. To be sure that a dog will live a long and active life, it is crucial that they get a good amount of exercise while remaining on a weight controlled diet that includes healthy dog treats.

Just as in humans, obesity is a major concern in the health of dogs. Canine obesity can cause serious health problems such as diabetes, pancreatitis, arthritis, and heart disease. While many dogs are lucky to stay naturally thin, it typically takes very little effort for some to quickly become obese.

Because of the love most people have for their pets, the urge to satisfy the adorable begging faces at the side of the dinner table is innate. Generally, that begging face is yearning to lick the ice cream bowl clean, or finish the last bites of that bacon cheeseburger, but while those bonus snacks will be greatly appreciated, they are not nutritionally beneficial.

There are many packaged dog snacks sold in stores that are nutritious as well as tasty, such as snacks made of salmon, sweet potatoes, or duck. These treats contain a ton of protein and antioxidants that are highly beneficial. Dog treats made from American lamb are also very healthy, such as lamb trachea which is naturally high in chondroitin and helps prevent and remove plaque and tartar. It is very important to read the ingredients of packaged dog treats to avoid buying products loaded with artificial products, fillers, and flavoring.

Before dogs were ever domesticated and became the common household pet, they hunted prey in order to eat. The entrails of their prey typically contained a large amount of digested vegetables and greens, so most dogs still innately crave vegetables as part of their diet. Many dogs experience difficulty in digesting tough fibrous contents on their own, so cooked green beans, carrots, or peas can make a delightful and healthy dog snack.

Cooked rice is also a great way to offer a dog a larger amount of food without a high content of fat and calories, and adds bulk to a weight control diet. Other snacks such as popcorn or rice cakes are low in fat content as well as calories, and are as enjoyable as they are nutritionally beneficial.

Another important asset in healthy dog nutrition is protein. Keeping hard boiled eggs handy in the refrigerator, and treating a dog to the cooked egg white provides a high amount of protein. Other snacks that can be surprisingly delightful to a dog are treats such as low fat cheddar or cottage cheese, plain yogurt, or unsweetened applesauce. A dog will enjoy licking clean a bowl of yogurt just as much as it would a bowl of ice cream.

While dogs are very brilliant animals, they are not capable of managing their own weight. That is why it is important for any dog owner that wants to see their pet live the longest and healthiest life possible to always have healthy dog treats handy.
