Shopping for a guinea pig cage may seem easy at first, but there may be several things to consider. Each product may have its own features and accessories making it hard for a pet owner to choose one. There are some easy things to consider when choosing a home for a small pet. When a guinea pig owner knows what to look for in a plastic cage, they will have the right tools to make a smart purchase.

The size of the home will depend on how many guinea pigs will be leaving in the cage. If someone is only buying one little pig, then they may be able to pick up a small sized cage. Having two or more furry pets living inside of it, may cause someone to have to purchase a larger sized living unit.

Most cages will have a standard look with a plastic bottom and a metal bar top piece. The top piece will sit gently on top of the plastic bottom and can be lifted out when the unit needs to be cleaned. The whole top portion of the home can be removed, or a large flap can open.

In the larger models, there may be a second story floor to the unit. These second floors may allow the guinea pig to crawl up a plastic ramp. The second floor allows the animal to choose where he or she wants to go and hide. The animal may choose to make the top or bottom area the sleeping area, and then use the second space as a washroom or eating area. If there are a few pigs living in one cage, then they may separate themselves when they want their own space.

The ramp that will come with most large cages can also create an exercising activity for pets. These ramps will cause a pet to have to work their muscles in order to get up and down between floors. Exercise balls and other items can be bought to help accessorize the cage unit.

Hiding spots for guinea pigs can be found as part of the unit or they can be bought at pet stores. Domes can be bought and placed in the corner of their home. Tents and netted material may hang from different areas allowing the pig to hide and sleep comfortably.

Some units will come with built in food and water dishes. These dishes could be the same color as the tray or the bars. They may hang with brackets off of the side of the cage. The water and food dishes can be cleaned and refreshed daily just by lifting open the lid.

Pet stores are full of guinea pig cage choices. Pet staff will help a guinea pig owner pick out a unit that works for them and their pig size family. The more animals there are, the larger the size may need to be. Staff will also show consumers what features are available and what may be the most useful to the pig. Some products will be available with a stand and wheels. When a stand is offered, the cage is kept up and off the ground and can be moved easily.
