Of course the swollen vulva and bloody discharge would be telltale signs but what would be more noticeable are the bitch's suitors that would try their luck to be accepted by the bitch. The bitch's suitors would mill around the house because a distinct smell emitted by a bitch in heat would serve as an advertisement of the bitch condition. Thus all the male dogs in the area would come a-visiting
Even if the dogs would mate anywhere, a bitch that is not yet ready to be mated would ignore the advances of the suitors. From the male dogs that surround the bitch only one will be allowed to mount. Holding the tail to one side is a sign that the female is ready to be mated. Known as flagging, this action of the female is a sign that it is ready to be mated. Once the male dog has mounted from behind, the vulva will be penetrated by the dog's penis. After penetration the male dog would commonly swing one leg over the bitch back so that the dogs will be stuck end to end.
Aside from being tied end to end, mating dogs may appear to be stressed so that owners that have not yet witnessed mating dogs would panic believing that the dog is hurt. It is natural for mating dogs to be stuck end to end and owners must never try to separate them. This is known as the "Tie" or the mating tie.
Unlike humans, a dog's penis can penetrate the bitch's vulva even if it is not stiff because a small bone inside the penis called baculum holds the penis stiff. After penetration, the bulbus glandis, an erectile tissue at the base of the penis will swell with blood. The erectile tissue will cause the tie as it traps the penis inside the vagina until the male's ejaculation is finished. The bulbus glandis will return to its normal size after the dog has finished ejaculating. The dogs will only be able to separate after the bulbus glandis has returned to its normal size.
Because leakage of sperm and prostatic fluid are prevented, impregnation is ensured. Any other male dogs that would want to mate with the female would not be given a chance as long as the mating dogs are stuck together thus mating will not be interrupted.
